The impetus for the CUSP comes from two things. First, one of the valuable things about playing team sports is that it helps children and young adults learn to socialize--yet this often takes place in a single-gender context. Second, Ultimate is a sport with a history of gender-inclusive play, and has a national-level mixed-gender competition. These two things make it an interesting example for learning how other sports programs might be adapted for quality coed play.
